SF Democracy Week
A week of events across San Francisco, running the same week as SF Tech Week. Talks, civic jams, dinners, screenings, workshops, demos, and whatever else people bring.
What’s happening in SF
Events are being added through September. Subscribe to the calendar and you’ll hear as they land.
Events will be added soon. Stay tuned!
SF Democracy Week is a decentralized community-created event. Add your event or subscribe to the calendar.
Ways to take part in SF
We’re still putting SFDW together, and there’s room for more. You don’t need a venue, a budget, or a finished plan to start.
If a call isn’t your thing, you can add an event or sign up as a partner without ever getting on Zoom.
Ideas you can just take
We think democracy efforts should be both serious, and seriously fun. If you like the idea of hosting but don’t have one yet, claim any of these and we’ll help you make it happen.
Constitutional comedy nightThere’s certainly a lot to laugh about, and cry about, and everything in between!
Civic improvAudience proposes a local problem, the cast plays out the city council meeting.
Cross-partisan paddle tournamentTeams drawn at random. Talk politics only at the net.
Ballot measure potluckBring a dish, work through the measures nobody understands.
Local news triviaHow about run it with a local newsroom. Loser buys the subscriptions?
A neighbors dinnerOne rule: nobody talks about national politics. Or better, talk about them, and work on co-created solutions.
Precinct seat clinicHow to get onto a local party committee, either / any party.
A civic jamA day of building things that make local civic life work better.
Or come up with your own ideas, add your draft event, and we’ll see how we can support you.
Why San Francisco
More of the technology shaping public life gets built here than anywhere else, and there are surprisingly few rooms where those people sit down with organizers, election officials, journalists, and neighbors. Let’s come together and see how we can spark more efforts to fix that.
Running alongside SF Tech Week is deliberate. Democracy Week events that touch on tech can cross-post to both calendars and reach both crowds, so a conversation about AI and elections can be with people building the AI, and the people worried about it.
We’re building on the energy from the AI & Democracy Unconference at Frontier Tower, InterdepenDance Day in Oakland, civic jams, and more.
Let’s build SF Democracy Week together
An event idea, an organization, a venue, a question, or just curiosity. All of it is welcome, and none of it needs to be figured out before you get in touch.
In Los Angeles instead? LA Democracy Week runs Oct 12-18.
